Meet Sheila Angel

Age: 8 Birthday: August 1, 2008 Grade: Primary, Level 3 Sheila Angel came to Awinjo House on January 27, 2014. Sheila’s mother married at about 11 or 12 years of age, produced 5 children, and then her husband died. She has little land, little income, and her grass thatched house fell down. We helped her to build another house, but she has no kitchen and no latrine. She did not feed her children but instead sent them out to get food from the neighbors.

Meet Sheila Athieno

Age: 7 Birthday: 2009 Grade: Primary, Level 1 Sheila Athieno came to Awinjo House at the end of May 2012. Sheila’s father is unknown, her mother abandoned her, and the grandmother who was taking care of her became very sick. She was brought to an American couple who nursed Sheila back to health, but when it came time for the American couple to go back to the US they brought Sheila to Awinjo to stay with us. She has grown a lot since she arrived and is doing very well in school.

Meet Barbara Natukunda

Age: 6 Birthday: 2010 Grade: Primary, Level 1 Barbara and her brother Denis were brought to us by the government on September 10, 2015. Their father and mother both had AIDS, and the father died a while back. The mother died and was buried the day before the children came here, and they were obviously very sad upon their arrival. However, since they have been at Awinjo House, they have both received much emotional healing and have made close friends with the other children.

Meet Joyce Apoya

Age: 16 Birthday: June 21, 2000 Grade: Secondary, Level 3 Joyce Apoya came to Awinjo House on June 28, 2016. Her father died in 2007 and her mother has four children. An uncle was helping with school fees but lost his job and Joyce was out of school with no hope for a bright future. Now she will begin Secondary 4 in 2017, and is now wanting to take some nursing courses and eventually become a nutritionist. She is hard working, very quiet and reserved, and has a beautiful voice and loves to participate in the church choir.

Meet Isaac Okola

Age: 17 Birthday: July 26, 1999 Grade: Secondary, Level 3 Isaac Oloka came to Awinjo House March 8, 2016. His mother is a widow with 5 children, and was supporting her family with agriculture. However, she was bitten by a cobra and then had to have hernia surgery, so she had no income. All of that set her back and she is now unable to pay school fees for her son.

Meet Shalom Iseren

Age: 2 Birthday: August 231, 2009 Grade: Primary, Level 3 Shalom Iseren came to Awinjo House on June 24, 2013, after her older sister Prossy came to stay here earlier that year. Their mother died in a road accident, their father is unknown, so the children went to stay with the grandparents who could not afford their school fees or care for them properly. Shalom is extremely shy but getting much bolder. She loves playing with the other children, has a beautiful smile, and loves to sing worship songs extra loud.

Meet Geoffrey Owino

Age: 6 Birthday: September 20, 2009 Grade: Primary, Level 1 Geoffrey Owino came to Awinjo House on January 10, 2015. He is from a remote village and does not speak very good English. His father died March 24, 2014. His mother is Akoth Bernadette; she’s 31 years old, has seven children, and no land to farm or grow crops. Her father in law is allowing her to use one of his houses, but she has no job or way of earning money.

Meet Silver Othieno

Age: 16 Birthday: 2000 Grade: Primary, Level 6 Silver came to Awinjo House on September 1, 2014. His mother is a widow with many children and cannot care for them properly. Silver was in a poor village school and eating only one meal per day. We had to put him back to fourth grade, even though he is over six feet tall. However, he is smart, humble, well-behaved, and doing exceptionally well in school. He is saved and prays and reads his Bible.

Meet Gloria Nyaburu

Age: 16 Birthday: June 17, 2000 Grade: Secondary, Level 3 Gloria came to Awinjo House on April 21, 2011. Gloria’s father died and her mother has no education, can only do menial jobs, and has three other children. Gloria had some bad behavior at first, but has now become saved and is well behaved and does well in school. She has a great voice, leads the Awinjo House church choir, and wants to be a nurse.

Meet Patience Akware

Age: 9 Birthday: March 4, 2007 Grade: Primary, Level 4 Patience came to Awinjo House on May 4, 2012. Patience’s mother was brutally killed in front of Patience and her half sister Sarah. Patience was about three years at the time and still shows signs of the trauma. She has no other relatives that could help her, except an elderly grandmother who cannot afford to pay her school fees. Patience does well in school, has a beautiful smile, and gets along with everyone.
